The 2nd Annual Lōkahi Day at Lānaʻi High & Elementary School (LHES) saw community involvement as volunteers came together to improve the campus in support of the current school year. Staff, students, ʻohana, and community members worked side by side, tackling tasks such as assembling new furniture, moving desks into classrooms, and removing outdated items.

“I am running the keiki section of Lōkahi Day while everyone else does their different jobs that they were placed in,” said Sadie, program manager for Kamoku Ulu. “We have all our students helping out with moving furniture out of the classrooms, putting together furniture, and helping monitor and watch the kids for those who can’t carry tables or chairs,” she said. “We assisted the school with planning it and connected them with resources necessary to have a successful day.”

“Lōkahi Day is something that brings the community and the school together,” said Sadie, adding that connecting these two groups is a significant part of her work to improve student achievement on Lānaʻi.

Staff and volunteers expressed their appreciation for the amount of support received during Lōkahi Day, noting how hundreds of new desks were brought in for students while older furniture was removed and stored. Volunteers’ efforts continue to impact the school through their dedicated service.
