Cut to the Chase

Lāna'i Culture & Heritage Center is hosting a Community Stewardship Day at Ka Lanakila Church in Keōmoku on Saturday, March 29, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Volunteers are invited to participate in this event to help support local initiatives. The Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i is hosting a couple events on Saturday, March 29. From 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., they’ll host moon phase journaling with Jamie Makasobe, co-owner of Kealopiko, a Native-Hawaiian small business. From 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., there will be live Hawaiian music featuring Sonny Lim and George Kahumoku, Jr.

Maui County will host the Blessing and Grand Opening Ceremony of the Lāna‘i Skatepark and Lāna‘i Youth Center on Saturday, March 29, at 11:00 a.m. The event will include a blessing of the new facilities, followed by a fun-filled Skate Jam hosted by One Love Skate. Attendees can meet local mentors, and enjoy skate contests and exciting prizes. 

Go Farm Hawaiʻi is hosting the Food Safety Basics: Practical Tips and DIY Solutions for Small Farms webinar on Monday, March 31, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. This webinar will provide practical tips and low-cost solutions to help improve food safety practices on small farms. Topics include organizing equipment, testing water, selecting materials for wash stations, sanitizing bins and tools, handling damaged produce, and managing animals. The Maui County Police Department is hosting an informal discussion to give the community a chance to ask questions, express concerns, and build relationships. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Lāna‘i Police Station. There will be no speeches or agendas—just an open opportunity to connect.

Maui County is hosting a Whitegoods, Metal, and E-Waste Collection event on Saturday, April 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Pulama Lāna‘i Fleet Yard, located at the corner of Ilima Avenue & Eleventh Street (across from The Courts). This collection event is open to all residents, with a fee for business/commercial accounts. Participants are asked to be prepared to unload their own items. Items accepted include refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, water heaters, A/C units, tires, batteries, household appliances, metal, propane tanks, TVs, computers, printers, copiers, and monitors. The Maui Police Department is now accepting applications for the 2025 Police Academy for the Youth of Lānaʻi. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, April 16. Sessions are free and on a first-come, first-served basis.

First Hawaiian Bank is hosting the 40th Annual Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run to support Special Olympics Maui athletes. The event will take place on Saturday, May 29, at 9:00 a.m. at the Lāna‘i Police Station. Registration is open now, and participants will receive a 2025 Torch Run shirt. The short sleeve shirt is available for $30, while the long sleeve shirt is available for $35. Please note that there are additional fees for sizes 2XL-3XL. Lānaʻi Park Complex will close its Fifth Street courts for repairs and renovations from January 27 through August 31. The courts are scheduled to reopen on September 1. Upgrades will include new fencing, light fixtures, and underground conduits, as well as the addition of a designated pickleball court. The adjacent facilities at Lānaʻi Park Complex will remain open. The Fraser Avenue Park is temporarily closed from now until early September. Construction will include separate play areas for large and small dogs, four parking stalls (with two designated as ADA-accessible), a water fountain, and ADA-accessible sidewalks. The Lāna'i Domestic Violence Taskforce has launched its Financial Assistance Program to support residents experiencing domestic violence, with a focus on ensuring the safety of victims and their families. The program provides financial assistance and resources to help individuals in need. Paper applications and documents are available by emailing lanaidvtf@gmail.com or can be picked up at Women Helping Women, PACT or the Department of Human Services office. The Alzheimer’s Association will host the Maui County Caregiver Support Group for Lānaʻi, Maui and Moloka‘i every third Tuesday of the month from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. To register, contact Shirley at 808-518-6648 or email her at shkan@alz.org.

HawaiiKidsCAN, Lānaʻi ‘Ohana Connection and Let’s Go Learn have created the ‘Ohana Learning Toolkit to help parents understand how their children are doing in school.
